Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to provide an update regarding the scheduled KWRAA fly-in at Tom Shupe's airstrip on July 4, 2020.
As you are likely aware, a number of high profile aviation events like Sun-n-Fun and AirVenture (Oshkosh) were cancelled for 2020. Also, a number of smaller events here in Ontario were cancelled such as the NRFI (Northern Regional Fly In) at Midland/Huronia Airport and numerous others as well.
The Executive met last night via "Zoom" to discuss the feasibility of our local chapter holding fly-ins during a pandemic and decided, after much discussion, that in light of the current restrictions on public gatherings and a number of other liability and risk factors that we will cancel the fly-in at Tom Shupe's this year. Mac and Mike had been working with Tom on a number of risk mitigation measures based on commonly used techniques to provide social distance, disinfection and a reduction of possible contact points where Covid-19 could be spread, however the potential liability issues outweighed the benefits of having a social gathering for the members. In addition, the Insurance policy that RAA provides for local events may not cover the chapter during a pandemic. RAA National is understandably also limiting its support and discouraging fly-ins during the pandemic.
We will continue to monitor the restrictions that are in place regarding gatherings and will make decisions on postponing or cancelling future fly-ins as the situation evolves.
Sorry for the disappointing news, but we are in very uncertain times.
Dan
Regular KWRAA meetings will resume in September, either on-line or in person once it is safe to do so. Watch here for further updates.
KWRAA SUMMER FLY-IN EVENTS
All fly-ins are "pot-luck" so please bring desert or salad – call Pat at 519-848-3392 or Mike at 519-338-2768 if you have any questions.
Burgers and drinks are supplied - $5 donation requested to offset chapter fly-in event expenses, but larger donations are gratefully accepted to assist with our good neighbour program. (In 2015, we implemented our "Good Neighbour" program, which allows the fly-in host the opportunity to invite a few neighbours to the event. KWRAA covers the cost of their meal and allows them to learn about RAA, meet a few of the pilots and see our amateur-built aircraft up close.)
Liability Coverage exists for all paid-up RAA National members at RAA sanctioned events, which includes all of our KWRAA fly-ins. Guests are generally welcome to fly in to these events, but may not be covered by the RAA policy in the event of an accident. Non-KWRAA attendees should contact the host for permission to land at these private airstrips.
